Weingut Römerhof

It was Franz-Peter Schmitz, master winegrower, who from the 1970s shaped Römerhof into what it is today – stone by stone, including the restored, historic vaulted cellar. His son Daniel first ventured out into the world: a farm in Canada after finishing school, studies in viticulture and oenology at Geisenheim, and experience at wine estates in South Africa, Argentina and Austria, before coming home for good. In 2020 they opened a new wine bar – a glass-built extension on the old slate wall, with a terrace and a direct view over the steep vineyards. Father and son now run the estate together.

The vineyards are steep, as Mosel vineyards should be, on varied clay-slate soils that give the wines minerality – the best plot is Mehringer Zellerberg. Riesling is the heart of the range, dry and full of character, but also the fruity-sweet styles the Mosel is known for. For red wine lovers, they make Spätburgunder and a powerful barrique-aged Frühburgunder. Around eleven hectares, much of it on steep terrain, all farmed with low yields and high quality as the goal.

This is honest wine from a family that has been at it a long time, and that doesn't cut corners. Römerhof is our one German voice – and it carries its country with pride.
